THE COAST – Spring Fashion Issue

IMG_4025

In case you missed it, a few weeks ago I had a fantastic opportunity to shoot for the Spring Fashion Issue for The Coast. It was so much fun and I got to share some of my fashion philosophies and favorite trends for this season (I’ll share more below!).

You can access the digital copy issue (through PressReader) here.

The Coast is a locally owned and free newspaper that covers anything and everything Halifax, from fashion to culture and events, food, current news and more! The cover was shot by Meghan T. Whitton and makeup by Emily A. Moore – you can see more of their work on contact info via the links at the bottom of this post!

During the interview, I was able to reflect on how Lovebyelle started, and speak to working within the fashion industry in a number of roles. I also spoke about a few of my current favorite designers: AKG, Maggie MacCormick, and Sarah Sears (and I am wearing pieces from all three favorites in the photos). Here are snippets from the article below:

Her Fashion Philosophy – “Don’t be afraid to try styles that you would never think of. It’s the things you’d never think of pairing together that look the best,” says Yeung, who says that though she’s had a lifelong interest in fashion, she never pictured making a career of it. “I always say, do what you like. Your style is an expression of your personality. If I want to wear white in winter I will. I don’t go by fashion rules, I do what I want.”

Her Favorite Springs Trends – “Right now, I’m all about curating my outfits with a peek of neutral suede piece – ’70s inspired suede is back in with the A-line skirts, cropped jackets and fun boxy dresses.” says Yeung of what she’ll be pulling from her closet this season. A forever fan of monochromatic dressing, she’s also digging lightweight denim, whether it’s wide-leg pants, a pencil skirt or a kimono jacket. And for a touch of romance – the exposed shoulder top. “Try my favourite style – the off-the shoulder blouse, paired with an airy culotte.”

What I’m Wearing: The Artist Dress – AKG // The Pencil Crop – Maggie MacCormick // Criss Cross Ring, Loop Bangles, Piya Choker, Finger Tipper Ring – Sarah Sears

FLARE 2016 May Issue

If you haven’t done so yet, you should pick up a copy of this month’s issue of FLARE. I mean, who isn’t obsessed with Shay Mitchell – she is freaking gorgeous and her style is on point (browse her IG here)!

Another bonus is you get to check out the localist team’s picks for the month of May, and I have to say, they are pretty sweet : ) If you flip a page over, you’ll see this month’s localist feature is about one of our own cool girls right from the city of #Halifax.

Spring Looks

I always love Spring and Fall (more-so Fall) because you have the option of wearing layers or having none at all. It’s also a great time to try out your separates in different combinations to refreshen your Spring looks! Here are three different types of looks I’ll be sporting this season (with the dressier, casual, and everything in-between):

unnamed (8)

A neutral drapey trench is a must have this season with it’s versatility – you can basically add it onto any outfit whether you’re heading to work, to travel, or any event. While we’re at it, I added on a nude suede skirt which is trending for Spring fashion. 70’s inspired suede pieces are back, but with an elevated feel!

What I’m Wearing: Lawson Trench Coat from Babaton at Aritzia / Nathaniel Sweater from Babaton at Aritzia / Hopper Skirt from Babaton at Aritzia / Avery Trainers from Senso / Lovesome One Sunglasses at Gentle Monster

unnamed (2)unnamedunnamed (1)

If you haven’t noticed yet, I am obsessed with SENSO footwear! Lately, I have been living in these Avery trainers because they look great and feel comfortable especially when I’m on my feet most of the day (huge win!). I also love this leather choker by local designer Sarah Sears. This was my first piece from her latest collection and I have to say I am hooked, and cannot wait to see what she has in store 🙂

What I’m Wearing: Moto Inspired Jacket by Wilfred at Aritzia (similar one here and here) / Metrocles Dress by Community at Aritzia / Low Rise Crop by J Brand / Piya Choker by Sarah Sears (find it here and here in Brass, Silver, or Oxidized Silver)

unnamed (5)unnamed (3)

I have to say wide legged pants and culottes are probably my favorite kind of bottoms – they are very comfortable, and they look fantastic! A lot of people always ask me whether they are too short for a wider leg and I always tell them it’s not necessarily their height – it’s pairing it with the right footwear and sometimes finding the right length of pant that comfortable suits them.

What I’m Wearing: Palmier Sweater by Wilfred at Aritzia / Eckhardt Pant by Babaton at Aritzia / White Loafer by Shellys London (similar one here and here) / Saxon Watch by Larsson & Jennings

FLARE 2016 February Issue

I am beyond excited to be sharing with you this month’s Localist feature in FLARE’s February issue! If you haven’t noticed yet, there is a theme of romance threaded throughout, and this month is especially meaningful to me as I am also getting hitched this upcoming September (so I may need to steal an idea or two from here!). Also just as exciting, Ilana and Abbi from Broad City are also featured on the cover of this month’s Love + Sex Issue!

Winter Looks

Shades of Grey

This has been my go-to winter look this season – layering on the blacks/greys. I just can’t stay away from this color palette (so simple and versatile all in one)! I literally looked in my closet last week and everything looked the same :-). Speaking of blacks, whites, and greys, how nice is this wall? J & I were driving near her house one day and spotted this while we were driving by – I am in love! You might see more of this in later posts.

But back to the outfit, I curated this outfit because it ties in what I believe are your winter essentials:

  1. A staple skinny jean (with or without the rips)
  2. A knitted oversized turtleneck
  3. A classic single colored wool scarf
  4. A menswear inspired tailored jacket
  5. Classic black booties

Oversized Sweaters & Suede Skirts

Willower bags have been my latest obsession (keep an eye out for a print feature in FLARE next month!) – all hand-made locally in Halifax, NS. Also, If you don’t see the style you’re looking for, Hannah does select custom work as well!

This oversized sweater is one of the comfiest (and warmest) pieces I own. It’s great for Fall/Winter layering and adds a bit of texture to your outfits – my only regret is not getting another color!

What I’m Wearing: Silvano Sweater – Babaton at Aritzia (similar one here and here) // Seaton Shirt – Babaton at Aritzia // Hopper Skirt – Babaton at Aritzia // Kelsey I Boot – SENSO

Kimono Jackets & Loafers

This is a classic outfit pairing with my favorite color scheme (again!). I love any jacket with clean lines and big pockets (like the one I’m wearing above) plus the wide sleeves adds the extra detail. I also love the pop of white from the loafers, but you can also always pair these outfits with sneakers or a bootie.

What I’m Wearing: Black Wool Jacket – Wilfred at Aritzia (similar one here, here and here) // Quarter Length Turtleneck – Babaton at Aritzia (similar one here) // Cohen Pant – Babaton at Aritzia // Lapera Loafer – Shellys (similar one here)

Tropical Paradise with NxN Photography

elle_07elle_11elle_06

I first met Luke and Alexa when we were shooting for Aritzia’s #NowhereEverywhere Campaign in conjunction with the grand opening of the #AritziaHalifax location (see post here and here). We immediately bonded with our similar aesthetic and appreciation for fashion and beautiful photos.

If you haven’t heard yet, they just launched North By North Photography, offering photography services from portraits and events, to editorial work and social media content. They are also open to a working with you on any creative ideas you may have so if you think of something, drop them a line!

Whenever Alexa and Luke contact me to do some collaborative work, I always jump at the opportunity. Working with them is always so easy and fluid, and they take every measure to make sure you are comfortable in the environment that you are working in. When Alexa told me the shoot was going to take place at the Public Garden Greenhouses, suede was what came to mind! I thought of pairing the greenery and natural lighting with a mixture of warm tans/camels, with the suede adding on that textural element! These pieces really speak true to my minimal style with small key details – and are great staples to bring into the Fall and Spring seasons. I am absolutely in love with the result of our shoot (as usual) and the talent and passion that these two have! They will quite literally climb trees to get the perfect shot!  It was a pleasure working with Luke and Alexa – and don’t forget to visit their page featuring this exact collaboration.

Fall->Winter Lookbook

Moto-Jackets & Button-Ups

If you don’t know this about me already, I love a good transition piece; something that I can wear all-year round but in a variety of ways! Take this button up dress for example. It’s a great staple piece that I can wear open, as a top, or a dress, and it has color (yay!).

What I’m Wearing: Strokous Dress by Wilfred Free – Aritzia / Moto-Style Jacket by Wilfred – Aritzia (similar one here) / Jamie Ripped Moto Jean – TopShop / Bailey IV Bootie- Senso

Midi Dresses & Wool Kimono Jackets

Usually for my job I am driving from one underground parkade to the next, so I can afford to go bare legs (here and there of course!). Who doesn’t love a good midi dress, and this one is actually quite pretty with a detailed mesh trim along the neckline.

What I’m Wearing: Black Wool Jacket by Wilfred – Aritzia (similar one here, here and here) / Townsent Dress by Babaton – Aritzia /

Mixing Texture

Layering is so much fun during fall & winter, and while your at it, why not play with a bit of texture? Here I’ve got faux-fur, velvet, ribbed wool, and a teddy-bear coat all combined! It’s all about combining the right amount of fabrics and styles to come up with a look that’s fun, yet still subtle.

What I’m Wearing: Teddybear Jacket by Wilfred – Aritzia (similar one here and here)/ Montpellier Sweater by Wilfred – Aritzia / Daria Pant by Wilfred Free – Aritzia / Violet Feather Vest – Club Monaco

Layering Summer

I picked up this boho airy dress this summer & was able to transition it right into my fall wardrobe with a bit of layering. Fall is all about trying new layering techniques, so why not throw on your summer frock over a pair of ripped denim or add a pair of thigh high stockings?

What I’m Wearing: Iambic Dress by Azure Skies – Aritzia (similar one here or here) / Ripped Skinny – The Castings / Alexa Knit Jacket – Club Monaco
