An Urban30 Experience

A little over last week, J & I met the lovely Alicia (Melanson) Braganza, owner of Alicia Melanson Hair & Makeup, and most recently, Urban 30 Blow Dry Bar. Having been in the hairstyling industry for almost 10 years, and owning a full service salon for the last 4, it was curiosity on this growing trend that brought her to visit and consult blow dry bars (ie. Le StyleBar) in Montreal on running her very own. Urban 30 gave birth literally weeks after the decision was made to open up Atlantic Canada’s first blow dry bar, and what a glamourous place it is!

Alicia has created a luxurious, retro-vintage environment where you can get pampered with sweet desserts, coffees, and teas, while getting your hair or makeup done all within 30 minutes. You get a wash, blow dry, and style in 30 minutes for about $30, which thus equates the name. Her mission is to recreate the culture of the generation of women who would get their hair styled and blown out on a regular basis. And the Urban 30 woman can be anyone who just enjoys beautifully styled hair without breaking the bank.

After being served a delicious ILLY coffee, I got to pick the style that I wanted done from a pretty menu all inspired by the classics, with names inspired by the east coast city we live in. I chose the ‘Urban By The Sea’, as I’ve always wanted to get that beachy wavy natural look without spending an hour in front of the mirror due to my lack of styling skills. The end result was exactly as I envisioned with a soft wave that lasted for days! Needless to say, Urban 30 definitely impressed me with the service, gorgeous decor, and a large range of Moroccan and Pureology products mostly retailing for only $30. Having had a lovely chat with Alicia, I also got to know some of her thoughts on hair and product trends for 2014:

Upcoming hair trends for spring and summer 2014 – the jennifer lawrence inspired pixie cut and more adventurous reds in coloring

Favorite product at the moment – Pureology Color Fanatic with 21 Essential Benefits (works as a primer, crack filler, heat protector, detangler, defrizzer, all in one bottle available for $30)

Holy grail product – Pureology Sea Kissed Texturizer (a salt free salt spray that gives you the effect of beachy wavy hair retailing for also $30)

If you haven’t tried it out yet, I recommend you get yourself over to Urban 30 on Barrington St. or a nearby blow dry bar wherever you may be. I promise, you’ll be hooked!

xoxo
